Why am I running?
With me, you’ll get an advocate for four key principles:
Transparency
You deserve a village board that is eager to communicate with you, soliciting your input and feedback on important topics affecting the village. The bigger the topic, the more communication is necessary.
Financial Discipline
Numbers don’t lie. Is what we are doing successful? Is it benefiting the residents? If not, why not and how can we fix it? How will our next initiative avoid the same problems? I’ve spent countless hours over the last few months digging into the village’s finances, understanding current state but also how we got there and where we are headed. Check out my analysis here and here to get a sense for my standards.
Rural Beauty
People move to Caledonia and stay because of its rural beauty. There’s still open space, night sky, wildlife, and peace and quiet. While the world around us evolves and we must react to that evolution, I believe we can do so while maintaining the charm of the community. Caledonia is an oasis amid more densely developed northern and southern neighbors. We shouldn’t abandon that asset.
Sustainable Growth
Ideology abounds on the topic of development, leading people to the extreme positions of all development is good or all of it is bad. I believe in rigorous financial and aesthetic analysis of each major proposal to answer the questions:
How does it benefit residents?
Is it consistent with the vision for the village?
Will it work?
If it doesn’t work are we prepared for the consequences?
Not every proposal is a good proposal.
Thoughtful and thorough analysis leads us to better decisions and sustainable growth that doesn’t harm what makes Caledonia attractive.
Who am I?
I have been a Caledonia resident for 12 years. I retired in 2024 after a 38-year career in technology, the last 18 of which I spent as a senior executive at US Bank. I’ve managed large teams, budgets, projects, and complex software, skills that I think would serve Caledonia well.
Over the years in Caledonia, I have volunteered with the Caledonia Conservancy, serving on their board and as their treasurer for several years. I currently also provide assistance to them with all their technology needs.
At home, I have a wife, 4 rescued horses, and an assortment of mostly rescued indoor and outdoor cats.
I also participate in the sport of triathlon, trying hard to stay fit and healthy.
And since some people seem to have a hard time with my last name, it’s pronounced ball-CH.
